The Customer Journey: Attract, Convert, Retain
A customer almost never goes from "unknown" to "buyer" in one step. They follow a journey—often called a tunnel or funnel—which can be broken down into three key stages. Understanding this journey helps avoid a common mistake: focusing solely on making a sale while neglecting those who don’t yet know you or are still hesitant.
1. Attract (Awareness)
The person has a need but doesn’t know you yet. Goal: get discovered. Channels: SEO, social media, brand awareness ads, word-of-mouth. At this stage, you don’t push your offer—you make yourself useful and visible.
2. Convert (Consideration and Decision)
The person knows you and is comparing options. Goal: reassure and make taking action easy. Tools: a clear website, reviews, a well-maintained Google Business profile, and a clear call-to-action (quote, booking, call). A single friction point (a form that’s too long, a slow page) and you lose the customer.
3. Retain (Loyalty)
The customer has made a purchase. Goal: bring them back and turn them into an advocate. Tools: email marketing, quality service, loyalty programs, review requests. Key reminder: retaining customers costs far less than acquiring new ones.
The Mistake to Avoid
Sending a "decision" message (a promotion, a purchase request) to someone still in the "attract" phase is like proposing marriage on a first date. Tailor your message to the stage. A good digital strategy supports the customer from start to finish, with no gaps in the process.
