Google Analytics and UTM: Knowing Where Your Customers Come From

If you were to track just one thing, it would be this: which source brings me customers, and which one wastes my time and money? Two free tools provide the answer: Google Analytics and UTM links.

Google Analytics (GA4), Simplified

Google Analytics records what visitors do on your site: where they come from, which pages they view, where they leave, and which ones complete an action. You don’t need to master everything—focus on three key reports: traffic sources, most viewed pages, and conversions.

UTM: Tagging Your Links

By default, Analytics sometimes misgroups the origin of a visit. UTM parameters are small tags added to your links (e.g., ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=bio) that precisely indicate where each click comes from. Use them on your bio links, emails, and ads—then you’ll know exactly which post or campaign brought in a customer.

Reading the Numbers to Make Decisions

The goal isn’t just to look at graphs but to take action: reinvest in sources that convert, fix pages where people drop off, and stop channels that only attract casual visitors. A simple dashboard, checked weekly, is better than a complex tool left unused.

What About Privacy?

Measuring data should comply with GDPR: use a consent banner, anonymize data, and know that privacy-friendly alternatives exist. Measuring effectively doesn’t mean excessive tracking.
