Online Advertising: Google Ads and Meta Ads Without Breaking the Bank

Online advertising (SEA for Google, Social Ads for Meta/TikTok) buys immediate visibility. Unlike SEO, the effect is instant but stops as soon as you cut the budget. When managed well, it remains highly cost-effective, even on a small budget.

Two different approaches

  • Google Ads (intent-based): you appear when someone is already searching for your product. Ideal for capturing existing demand (e.g., “roofing quote,” “vegetarian restaurant Lyon”).
  • Meta Ads / social networks (interruption-based): you show your offer to people who aren’t actively searching but match a specific profile. Ideal for raising awareness, sparking interest, and targeting by interests.

How the bidding system works, simply explained

You don’t pay for a fixed spot; you take part in an auction triggered with every search. Your ranking depends on your bid AND the quality of your ad and landing page. A relevant ad can therefore cost less than a poorly performing one, even if the latter bids higher.

The 4 key settings to focus on

  • Targeting: geographic area, keywords, or audience. The more precise it is, the less you waste.
  • Daily budget: start small (€10–20/day), measure results, then increase spending on what works.
  • The ad: a clear message, a benefit, and a call to action.
  • The landing page: the page users land on after clicking must deliver on the ad’s promise, or the budget is wasted.

The golden rule

Never judge a campaign by clicks alone, but by the cost per lead or sale (the well-known ROAS, or return on ad spend). Measure, cut what doesn’t convert, and reinvest in what delivers results.
